Before choosing a cashback card in Mexico, compute the effective cashback: the advertised rate multiplied by the share of your spend that actually falls into rewarded categories. A 6%-on-restaurants card only pays off if you eat out frequently; otherwise a 1.5%-2% universal card can return more money per year.

The second critical point is the monthly caps. Klar Platino, for example, limits accelerated cashback to a monthly amount; once exceeded, the rate drops to 1%. Santander LikeU and HSBC 2Now have no cap, which makes them predictable for high spend.

Finally, evaluate how cashback is paid out: some cards credit it as a digital wallet redeemable only at certain merchants, while others credit it as a balance on your statement. We prefer the second model because it is more liquid.

Methodology

We compare the headline rate against effective cashback under two spend scenarios: average user ($5,000 MXN/month) and high user ($20,000 MXN/month). We subtract the annual fee from the projected annual return and only consider recurring spend categories (groceries, restaurants, gasoline, streaming). We exclude cards whose cashback is conditioned on direct deposit of payroll.

Conclusion

The highest cashback is not always the best: what matters is the effective rate over your real spend. If your spend is dispersed, prioritize a card with universal cashback like HSBC 2Now. If you concentrate spend in one category, Klar Platino delivers the highest return in the Mexican market.
